‘Ishtika Aalaya’ located in Chandigarh, India, this brick abode was inspired by customers’ desire for an earthy home. The composite climate of the place requires the building to be cooler for most of the year and requires sufficient sunlight during harsh winters. Therefore, the layout was dictated by analysis of the path of the sun.

This house is organized in three levels. The ground floor houses a single lady and her 10-year-old daughter, the first floor is intended for long-term visitors and the second floor is intended for domestic use. The design revolves around a courtyard that provides users with private usable space rather than just a skylight, creating a dynamic dialogue between interior and exterior spaces. This courtyard has been strategically positioned at the front (southwest area) of the building, which ensures midday winter sun penetration into the dining area, followed by afternoon sun into the annexed veranda. in the living room.

Ground floor Plan

The bold brick archway takes center stage, revealing itself as one enters the space through the arched doorway. The volumes of juxtaposed bricks and the planes of exposed concrete in ocher color with very selective fenestrations help to block the major part of the south-west facade. The large window on the kitchen wall is accompanied by a large planting, allowing the light to filter inside. A modern, minimal kitchen and dining area on the right side of the yard connects to the ramp on the far left.

The ramp provides barrier-free access to the ground floor while separating the entrance from the upper floors via the lateral but internally interconnected staircase. This ramp leads further to the backyard, contributing to an interesting continuity. Along with the backyard are two bedrooms, carefully placed to ensure privacy. The master bedroom is a seamless space with an exposed gray concrete ceiling and large windows for a visual connection to the backyard. The interior finishes of the private spaces are designed in subtle tones, while the ocher colored exposed concrete ceiling adds liveliness to the living space.

The project explores the possibility of combining the modern identity of a house with a traditional sense of a home. The multifunctional interior spaces offer the possibility of transformation over time according to the daily user, forming the feeling of being at home. The envelope that surrounds this house is individualistic in its character and contextual in its response with the use of 3 types of Jali patterns. Ocher-coloured concrete planes complement the traditional red masonry, giving a strong identity to the facade. The brilliance of the brick facade is ensured by the use of red mortar rather than gray mortar. The composition of these elements and spaces really brings users an interesting and pleasant experience as they are housed in a series of spaces harmonized with the comforts of a home.
