The PEOPLE of Furness can look forward to a fun summer outdoors this year, with a plethora of activities available for avid adventurers.

The Furness Peninsula is known for its beautiful coastline, which is why so many people immerse themselves in southern Cumbria.

If you are looking for some outdoor fun in the Furness area, the number one spot on most people’s list is the South Lakes Safari Zoo.

Home to more than 1,000 of the world’s rarest and most endangered animals, get as close as possible physically to experience the amazing creatures firsthand.

For those who want to get out to sea and maybe spot a seal or two, a trip through Piel Island is the perfect day trip.

The extremely popular ferry service to Piel Island officially resumed service on May 17 after the Covid-19 pandemic forced its temporary suspension.

The prospect of seeing seals a few meters from the boat makes trips very popular with families. Gray seals can be seen in the water around the nature reserve, usually at high tide. At low tide, the seals hoist themselves in large numbers on the “spit” at the bottom of the nature reserve.

While you’re in the area, why not visit the South Walney Nature Reserve? With stunning views over Morecambe Bay, this pebble island reserve is full of interest and a fantastic location for bird watching.

The beautiful Furness Abbey is open to the public daily and is perfect for those wishing to learn more about the history of the Furness area.

Located in the picturesque ‘Vale of the Deadly Nightshade’, Furness Abbey was once the second largest Cistercian monastery in the country. Today, the imposing abbey stands in spectacular ruin along the “Cistercian Way”.

The site has been celebrated for its beauty and visitors marvel at the peace, tranquility and ambiance of this magnificent hidden gem.

After that, if you fancy a hike, the view of the Hoad at Ulverston is second to none for a view of Morecambe Bay.

And lastly, on a warm day, there’s nothing like traditional homemade ice cream, and Cumbria Cow has got you covered. Enjoy a delicious ice cream, milkshake, waffle, sundae or cake in sunny Ulverston.
